Welcome to Good Dog Gift ShopThe products in our dog shop are interwoven throughout the site with thoughts and feelings about dogs and our relationships with dogs by some of the most talented and famous writers about animals, along with snippets of dog news, information, quotes and humor. We hope this will make your search for a dog gift more enjoyable. It’s our way of honoring the profound and unique contributions dogs make to our lives. They enrich us in deep and powerful ways that touch our hearts and that all dog lovers understand.
Just as dogs make us happy, we seem compelled to make them happy too. We don’t just feed them, clean up after them, take them for walks and see that they get their shots and vitamins, we buy them endless supplies of toys and treats, plush dog beds and fancy sweaters, as well as the doggie hats and boots, dog jewelry, hair ornaments and bling which we do for ourselves.
The great thing about all gift giving is that it’s a win-win situation. Giver and receiver both feel good. Gift giving brings out the best in us. It’s an expression of what makes us most human – the ability to care for someone other than ourselves, and a tribute to the human spirit. Giving a gift to another human is one thing – the person receiving the gift responds in a personal way and may be expected to reciprocate at some future time. The exchanging of gifts between family members or friends is a major part of human culture, a ritual of mutual caring and bonding.
Giving gifts to or for dogs is different. You don’t get a return gift at Xmas or on your birthday. It brings its own rewards, depending on the gift. If it can be put in the mouth, eaten, chewed on, ripped up or dragged around, experiencing the sheer joy in your dog when he or she gets the gift is a peak experience for you both. A great dog bed also falls into this category. It’s your dog’s personal space and valued accordingly. If the gift is wearable – a dog collar, dog clothing, jewelry, carrier or other accessories, the primary rewards are to you – the pleasure of giving your dog the very best and seeing him or her look their cutest and coolest. Either way, giving dog gifts seems like a no-brainer.
According to the 2010-2011 American Pet Products Association survey, Americans spent $48.35 billion on their pets in 2010, and the figure is expected to top $50 billion in 2011. Of this, we spent $70 billion on food treats ($254 billion on food) and $43 billion on dog toys. That’s a lot of kibble. For dogs to be able to extract over a hundred billion dollars a year from us in dog toys and treats alone – never mind the billions we spend on dog food, vets, boarding, travel and grooming, they must be doing something right. Giving dogs gifts, whether for birthday, Xmas or for just because, expresses our love for them. It reaffirms the deep bond we have with these people in doggie suits who love us so totally and will stand by us forever. As long as we keep the stuff coming.

You are the living definition of grace. When they are gone for a very long time, for days and weeks and months, you love them. When they have left you outside in the rain or the sleep or the hot, hot sun, you love them. When they yell at you to get down from the sofa or not to drink from the water dispenser or not to chew the Superman action figure, though you are not quite sure what it is that you have done that is wrong, you love them. You respond to their touch with love. You respond to their ire with love. You respond to their love with love. You respond with love. You are grace. Terry Bain. You Are a Dog.
I pause before using the word soul. But my experiences with the dogs in my life convince me that there is some profound essence, something about being a dog, which corresponds to our notion of an inner soul, the core of our being. Jeffrey Mousaieff Masson. Dogs Never Lie About Love.
I am – I say this with some pride and not a little wonder – a “dog person.” I make no excuses for unabashedly loving them, all of them, even some that have bitten me. I have always had dogs and will have dogs until I die. I have rescued dozens of dogs from pounds, always have five or six of them around me, and cannot imagine living without dogs. They are wonderful and, I think, mandatory for decent human life. Gary Paulsen. My Life in Dog Years.
Dogs are the leaders of the planet. If you see two life forms, one of them's making a poop, the other one's carrying it for him, who would you assume is in charge? Jerry Seinfeld
